How to do good…

In Romans 7:14-25, Paul says that he does what he doesn’t want to do, and he doesn’t do what he wants. He could not find the way to do that which is good:

Romans 7:18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.

The will to do good that is in us was put there by God before we came into being:

Philippians 2:13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.

But we do not know how to do His will; that understanding comes from God Himself:

Job 32:8 But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding.

The only way to know how to perform His good pleasure is found in 1 Corinthians 6:17:

1 Corinthians 6:17 But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.

Joining our spirit with the Lord is our primary responsibility; God reinforced that truth in the first commandment:

Mark 12:30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.

The “how to do good” now becomes “how to love God,” and He placed that in His Word in the simplest of terms:

John 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.

He rewards those who diligently seek Him by investing time in knowing Him through His Word and prayer (doing the first commandment).

Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

He guarantees that if we draw near to Him, He will draw near to us:

James 4:8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you…
