Learning Obedience
I had spent the better part of my life in the church; going so far as to become a deacon and elder in a few of them.
But it was now the spring of 2010, and I was facing a crisis of faith. Who was this God I claimed to worship? I read the Bible, but why didn’t those verses come to fruition in my life?
I had been misunderstood and therefore mistreated most of my life so I expected God to be no different. I looked at the sky and asked:
“Who are You? Tell me what to do and I will do it. Because when I stand before You I am going to tell You that I did everything You told me and nothing happened.”
There was no answer; but the teaching would begin within a few days.
Unbeknownst to me at the time, I had stumbled upon the key to the kingdom of God: relentless obedience; otherwise known as the fear of the Lord.
Over the next seven years, He taught me true obedience from His perspective and how highly He values it. Once I understood, He instructed me on how to actually do His first commandment. Then, the following two years He gave me a heart to love others, and taught me how to do His second commandment.
I had set out out to prove that God did not perform His Word;
And in the process, I had become His greatest advocate for obedience…
Ecclesiastes 12:13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
